How Gwyneth Paltrow And Kate Moss's Gucci Snake-Print Dress Earned Trophy Vintage Status | British...

Ahead of the Vogue Vintage Sale on 29 March, co-hosted by Jorja Smith and Iris Law and presented by eBay, Vogue is celebrating all things pre-loved. Not all vintage treasures are rare designer pieces loaded with fashion lore: from a perfectly worn leather jacket uncovered in a thrift store to a slogan tee sourced online, pre-loved items can (and should) be a key player in every modern wardrobe.

We all remember Gwyneth Paltrow 's velvet Tom Ford for Gucci suit, which she wore to the MTV Video Music Awards back in 1996 (and later revisited for Gucci's LA show 25 years later, in 2021). But what about the designer's blue python-print dress, which the Shakespeare in Love star – with newly dyed brunette hair – wore to the Met Gala in 1999, when the theme was "Rock Style"?

The actor's keyhole cutout dress was a beaded version of a shorter design that first appeared in Gucci's spring/summer 2000 collection (look 36, to be precise), which, fittingly enough, was inspired by "Farrah Fawcett and Blondie, with a touch of Gwyneth Paltrow," according to Ford. "Gucci's catwalk sizzled with glamorous vixens swathed in python prints, leather trainer pants and sparkling jersey dresses, a movie star's dream wardrobe, circa 1979," Vogue 's review read at the time.

Paltrow wasn't the only famous face to wear the snake-print dress: Kate Moss wore the runway style in teal for a US Vogue editorial, while Gisele Bündchen wore the grey version on the January 2000 cover of Harper's Bazaar . That same month, Cameron Diaz wore the one-sleeved python dress in grey, with Shalom Harlow wearing the grey halter-neck style in the March 2000 issue of US Vogue (in many ways it was the Miu Miu micro-mini skirt of the season).

At the time, the dress marked a sea change in the world of fashion. "It was the right dress at the right time," Lab2022 founder Neil Leonard, whose extensive Tom Ford for Gucci archive has been worn by the likes of Bella Hadid and Rihanna, tells Vogue . It's worth noting that the python style debuted during the same season as Versace's jungle-print dress , which was famously worn by Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammys. "Something was in the air," the collector continues. "Women were gravitating towards looks that they didn't already have in their wardrobe; they wanted more than a little black dress. It was a turning point."
