Recently, Lush Cosmetics Australia has partnered with Sea Shepherd Australia for a Plastic-Free July campaign aimed at raising awareness about marine debris pollution and supporting on-the-ground conservation efforts.
The initiative highlights both organisations' long-standing commitments to environmental advocacy, with a specific focus on Far North Queensland's Mapoon coastline.
⁘Lush has been actively campaigning for social justice since 1995 and globally, we've donated over 180 million AUD through various giving streams,⁘ Jessielee Pearce, Lush's Advocacy ⁘ Activism Executive for Australia and New Zealand, told RetailBiz .
⁘Our partnership with Sea Shepherd is part of this ongoing commitment to campaigning for what is right, staying true to what has always been Lush's core mission ⁘ to leave the world Lusher than we found it.⁘
Pearce explained that the partnership builds on a strong history of collaboration with Sea Shepherd, supporting campaigns against illegal whaling, shark finning, and marine pollution. She added that Sea Shepherd's hands-on approach aligns closely with Lush's values.
⁘Sea Shepherd are on the ground, doing the work to protect coastlines all across the world, and it's our privilege to be able to use our platform to support them, to raise awareness of the issues happening right here in Australia, and to help fund their 2026 Mapoon beach clean,⁘ she said.
The campaign brings a spotlight to Mapoon, an ancestral territory of the Tjungundji people, located in the Gulf of Carpentaria — an area facing the highest density of marine debris in the country. According to Pearce, the waste washing ashore in Mapoon is not local but is having a severe environmental and cultural impact on the region.
Pearce emphasised that this issue is not going anywhere without direct action. Every year, a massive increase in marine debris is seen in Mapoon, from 6.38 tonnes and 84,881 pieces of waste in 2023 to 15.7 tonnes 280,000 pieces of waste in 2025.
